Ascent Trip Report

Started from Spooner Summit Trailhead at 4:15 pm - way too late, but did it anyway. Followed the Tahoe Rim Trail until just before (maybe 100 yds, +/-) the junction with the road & cut cross country up the slope to intersect the road, then followed it the rest of the way south to the peak. The sun went down at 7:02 and I reached the peak at 7:35, so it was already getting pretty dark. Nevertheless, the views of the lights of Reno, Carson, Minden/Gardnerville & Tahoe were all magnificent, still. Because it was dark, I made no attempt to look for a summit register.

Wanting to save batteries and preserve my night vision as long as possible, I returned by moonlight (maybe about a day before the first quarter moon) for a mile & a half to the junction with the trail to Marlette Lake Camp. By then, I was back into the forest canopy, and the shadows of the trees made it way too hard to judge if a white spot was a rock or just a spot of moonlight on the trail. So I went the rest of the way with my headlight on. Since I was alone and it was dark, I was fairly concerned about running into a furry meat-eater as big as me (a bear or cougar), but fortunately, didn't see anything besides birds & squirrels.

Got back to the car at Spooner Summit at 11:10, so it was 6 hours & 50 minutes for the round trip. I was on the summit for about half an hour, eating a sandwich, taking pictures, and putting on warmer clothes - which ended up being warmer than I needed once down off the ridge & out of the wind.

I need to learn to do this earlier in the day. Although the nightime return hike was an interesting experience, I would have preferred daylight. But it's done now, and I've bagged my 4th Nevada County Highpoint. :-)
