Ascent Trip Report

July 25, 2015
Mt. Crawford and Stairs Mountain
Temps 60’s, partly cloudy to start – ended in showers
9:45 am Gudi, Torsten and I are headed up the Davis Path with a plan to visit Mount Crawford, Stairs Mountain and Mount Resolution on the way back down. The weather today is predicted to be partly cloudy. As we start up the mountain this morning it is more that ‘partly’ cloudy and we are hoping that is clears up – after all we are visiting mountain summits that are on the “NH 52 with a View” list! Even though we have bathed in bug spray, the mosquitoes are winning! Hopefully they leave enough blood in us so we can continue our hike!
11:10 am We reached the Crawford Spur trail. On this hike almost all the climbing is done once you reach this point. In just over 2 miles we have gained 1,900 feet. Now we can start to enjoy the views. Along the spur trail to the summit of Crawford there is some really fun open scrambles – nothing difficult, just fun.
11:30 am After reaching the summit of Crawford, enjoying the views and a small snack we head back down to the Davis Path to continue toward our next goal – Stairs Mountain.
12:20 pm We reached the Davis Path/Resolution junction and decided to take a lunch break here. The hope that the clouds thin, is not coming to fruition – seems the clouds are getting thicker as we climb. The part of the hike was pretty easy compared to the steepness we encountered for the first 2 miles
12:40pm – We got to the Rocky Branch trail and continued left toward Stairs mountain. This section of the hike became moderately steep again and had some boulder hopping involved. This slowed Gudi down and Torsten was feeling good and got ahead of us. Which normally would not be a problem but…
1:00pm We reached the Stairs spur and there is no sign of Torsten. Hmm, did he turn or continue. Since there is only a few hundred yards to the summit we decide to put out the walkie-talkies, Gudi will go to the summit and I will continue straight and try to catch Torsten (if he went that way). Turns out when Gudi reaches the summit – Torsten is not there, she lets me know via the radio and I speed up my pace to try to catch up with him. Finally after 0.6 miles I catch up with him and tell him he missed the corner. ‘My bad’, he says, ‘ I was thinking about work’. So back we go to Stairs Mountain, the weather has continued to deteriorate and it is now low clouds – foggy and it begins to drizzle.
1:40 pm. We have reached the summit of Stairs and instead of the weather improving it is now drizzling and you can watch the clouds being blown in. The views are now gone so we take just a short break and start our return trip.
2:55 pm. We reached the Crawford Spur. Along our way home it rained in the upper elevations, but now it has stopped but we are all soaked through – but at least it is warm today so no one is cold – just wet.
4:10 pm Back at the car. We decided to skip the summit of Resolution and we will visit it some other day when we can enjoy the views!
