Ascent Trip Report

much more difficult than expected for a 5mi hike! trail was already broken but the snow was still pretty deep. i would have had trouble following the Long Trail, as a number of people had skied down and taken different paths. marc knew which ones to choose, but we still ended up halfway up the mtn and had to follow the ski trails to the top. i was pleasantly surprised to find that the Jay Peak staff didn't seem to mind hikers on their slopes; one simply ignored us and another stopped to chat and suggested that we warm up in the summit lodge. it was absurdly windy on the ski slopes; marc lent me his goggles as i had forgotten my own. tagging the actual peak was difficult, as getting up the ladder and walking the few yards to the highest point on the rock slab resulted in nearly being blown over a few times. i insisted that we sit in the lodge for a few min to regain feeling in my fingers, even though marc wanted to keep moving. i managed to hold us up a number of times on the trip. we went back down to the col and found the orange fenced area designating the path to Big Jay.
