Ascent Trip ReportMIRADOR EL VIGIA (WATCHMAN), overlooking the Port of Manzanillo, is located West of downtown Manzanillo's Jardin Alvaro Obregon. It is an easy rewarding 30 minute round trip hike to the Mirador (lookout) offering outstanding views of the Port area. Access to the Mirador is from the South-West corner of the Jardin.
Also a herd path/rough trail connects Mirador El Vigia to Cerro de La Cruz, for a loop hike ...... the description of this route is given below.
WALKING DIRECTIONS TO THE MIRADOR.
From downtown Manzanillo's Jardin Alvaro Obregon walk to the South-West end - this is the corner of Calle Carrillo Puerto and Balbino Davalos.
Walk West on Calle Balbino Davalos, pass templo de Guadelupe on the left, and climb to the crest of the road. To the left is a large archway and straight ahead is a small religious monument with (a) an ascending ramp to the left and (b) a descending road to the right. Both routes take you to the Mirador and are ideal for a loop hike.
(a) Ascending ramp to the left - Climbs and makes a large bend right before coming to a junction, take the narrow stairs to the left besides a tall building on the right. Walk to behind the building to a very narrow concrete ships-ladder, that climbs to a gate in a tall chain link fence at the west end of a basketball court. Walk thru the gate/across the basketball court to the right corner where a wide staircase ascends to a crest (elev 185), on the West side of the Radar Station on top of the hill (elev 200) to the right. As you descend North, straight ahead to the Mirador, route (b) (described below) comes in on the right, from the North side of the Radar Station. A slight descend leads to the Mirador with all its rewards.
(b) Descending road to the right - Ends at a very short distance where a walkway to the right climbs and winds its way to the top thru the densely built homes on the slopes of the hill. Do not be concerned about what "looks like a dead-end at two places, both are sharp left turns - in fact at the second an arrow points the way". Views of the Naval Base and the downtown area are below to the right as you climb.
Above the homes the route passes on the North side of the Radar Station, which is above and to the left, before meeting up with route (a) coming in on the left. Continue right to the Mirador.
HIKING DIRECTIONS FROM MIRADOR EL VIGIA TO CERRO DE LA CRUZ ..."FOR THE HARDY TYPES ONLY"
From the foregoing route (a) Ascending ramp to the left ..... take an immediately left (south) after going thru the gate in the tall chain link fence, above you on the hill are the Communication Towers. Walk to a path that climbs to the casitas on the side of the mountain, about 30 feet before arriving at the last casita an not too obvious herd path leads horizontally right (below the casita), then winds/climbs its way to the Communication Towers ..... you arrive at the northeast corner of a service building, find your away to the southwest corner, a power line follows the ridge to the summit of La Cruz. Look/find a rough trail that follows the power line to the top (stay away from a herd path to the left).
