Ascent Trip Report

Pico de Malpaso, 1501m, P1501m

Map: Freytag & Berndt - Isla Hierro 1:30,000

Stats: 100mH, 1+0.5km

Time: start 16:00, ascent 0:20, descent 0:10.

Start: from dirt road to S, driveable, Elev 1400m

Route: wide zigzag dirt road to summit, probably driveable, at least part way.

Difficulties: none.

Triangulation point: typical cylindrical column, with three locating grooves on top face, on tall square plinth with ladder on N face. S face has rivet inscribed with N. G. U. 603. S face also has an elliptical scar where standard metal plaque apparently used to be.

Notes: Island highpoint of El Hierro. Canary pines on slopes, summit sparsely vegetated, mast, cairn, sign close to summit declaring “Malpaso 1500m”. Small rock outcrop beside trig pillar appears to be highest point. Dense haze, no view. 4 Raven, 3 Berthelot’s Pipit, Sheep, Swifts (assume Plain Swift)

Climbed during a 1 week package holiday from the UK, during which we also visited the HPs of Tenerife, La Palma and La Gomera.
