Ascent Trip ReportI spent several days in Albuquerque and dragged my friend Naomi up the road to Sandia Crest. Its proximity to ABQ makes this a very easy highpoint to attain and the variety of ways to the top makes it able to satiate any number of personal preferences. I would have loved to hike the La Luz trail, though probably at another time of year.
The road to the top had been plowed several days prior but there was still snow on portions of the road, especially in the downhill lane. Traffic was relatively brisk on a Saturday and there were plenty of cars in the parking lot at the top, as well as many cars on the side of the road that had carried kids and their parents to hilly areas for sledding.
The viewing platform at the summit was cleared of snow and I touched the rock there but I also climbed onto drifts just north of the platform with rocks sticking out. Naomi apparently has no interest in being a county highpointer, as she took photos for other visitors as I tromped in the snow.
My first New Mexico county and my first cohp over 10,000 feet.
We hit the Boca Negra Canyon portion of Petroglyph National Monument after Sandia Crest - a worthy (and quick) destination for anyone spending time in the city.
