Ascent Trip Report

With a forecast of thunderstorms in the afternoon, I left early for the short but interesting Speer Kletterweg (climbing path). The trailhead was not too difficult to find, leavning the Zurich-Chur motorway at Schänis and driving through Schänis towards Kaltbrunn, the turning is the one immediately before the bridge over the Steinenbrugg river about 1km before reaching the center of Kaltbrunn. The road up the valley is narrow in places and turns to dirt for the last few km, but is in very good shape, ending in a large parking area at the beginning of the path. The whole route is well signposted so I didn't need to refer to the map all day. The ascent begins on forest road through trees, emerging onto a path through alpine meadows, at this time of year filled with flowers. At the bottom of the Kletterweg I donned harness, helmet and used a via ferrata set as protection on the cables. The route is not technically very difficult (around UIAA II) but the rock is a conglomerate of pebbles which is not especially reliable, making self-protection (including helmet) the sensible option. Amazingly of the 10 or so other people I met in 3 parties, none was equipped in this way, which is unusual in Switzerland in my experience. The route is fun, with short passages of rock interspersed with path, and ends suddenly as it emerges on to the flatter summit area only a few m from a fenced summit with viewfinders. The views are extensive, especially south where Glärnisch and the Murtschenstock show well. Descent can be made by following the ridge south until a signpost indicates the descent route towards Wengi and the car park. This makes a nice round for a half day and I was off in good time to get home before the storms.
