Ascent Trip Report

Nine members of my Saturday hiking club went up the Long Canyon Trail towards Gold Hill. This is one of my favorite trails--branches off from the Bull of the Woods trail slightly less than a mlle up from the Ski Valley; ascend next to a roaring stream to a meadow at around 11500 where everyone ate lunch. We had exected snow and thus did not intend to go all the way up Gold Hill. Indeed we did hit snow above 11000. However Gary and I left our packs in the meadow but took our poles to explore further. We did encounter substantial drifts for another quarter mile, but then after a sharp turn the trail was nearly snowless up to another meadow close to treeline. It looked like the path to at least close to Gold hIll was virtually snowless. Instead we climbed a nearby knob (11907 accroding to my GPS altimeter) south of the trail that offered magniicent views of snowcapped peaks.
