Ascent Trip Report

Did the entire Willey Range including Avalon on a gorgeous Thursday in June.

Parked at the Crawford Depot and took the Avalon Trail up to the intersection with the A-Z trail. The brook crossings were easy and I took the Cascade Loop option on the way up. After hanging a left at the junction, it was a rocky but dry climb to the small Avalon Spur (not tricky at all) and ended up with amazing views of Crawford Notch and beyond.

Continued up the Avalon Trail to Mt Field where I hoped to run into some whiskey jacks but none were around. I made my way over to the short side path for great views of Bretton Woods and the Mt Washington hotel. After a quick snack I continued south towards Mount Willey. This trail was beautiful. I did encounter moose tracks and saw a pine marten. After running into a couple other groups, I summited Mount Willey - by far my favorite summit of the day. The alternative viewpoint just south of the summit facing east was breathtaking, with insane views of Webster Cliffs, Crawford Notch, the TriPyramids, and the Sandwich Range. The other viewpoint west had amazing views into the Pemi Wilderness including Carrigain and the Hancocks.

After a quick lunch I hiked north back to Mt Field and then onto Mt Tom. The trail was a little muddy in places but conditions were mostly great. Views from Mount Tom were wonderful in all four directions from the various known side paths on the summit. After snapping some pictures, I returned to my car down the A-Z Trail and Avalon Trail back to Crawford Depot. Crossed paths with a red fox at the railroad tracks. Gorgeous and unforgettable day on the Willey Range.
