Ascent Trip ReportBefore I started hiking I loved (and still do) to mountain bike. The people who operate the MW autoroad have one day a year when they allow folks to pay money to rid etheir bikes to the top. Then you can't even ride down! So we poached it.
We road our bikes from Tinkham Notch Lodge up the AT to the road. From there we camped, awakening at 2 am. We road our bikes to the summit under a full moon. It was fantastic having the early morning light all to ourselves. On our screaming descent (the road is 8 miles long dropping over 5500') shredded brake pads and tested our nerves. Twothirds of the way down we passed the first morning van going up the mountain. Th edriver did a quick about face and chased us down the road. I'm sure he radioed ahead thinking they would sandwich us between exit gate and van. We disappeared off on to the AT just before the van went roaring by. Poof! Gone in a blink of an eye.
