Ascent Trip Report

Although we approached Rich Mtn from Hickorynut Mtn to the W, via Cedar Creek Rd, the simplest approach is from the E, and that is the way for which I provide directions here.

On US-221 9 miles S of I-40 or 10 miles N of Rutherfordton, head W on Thermal City Rd. Call this point mile 0.0. Just 0.1 mile later, the road turns 90 degrees L. At mile 1.0, turn R to remain on Thermal City Rd where the road straight ahead changes its name to Crutchfield Rd. At 3.9 miles, turn R on Pinnacle Parkway, entering a community named The Pinnacle. The road is well-graded gravel. At mile 5.0, the road tops out near the summit of Lump Mtn and begins descending. You can bag this one with a short walk into the woods. At 6.8 miles, pass Doubleview on the L. At 7.4 miles, reach a dirt road on the L just past a small wood gray shack. A 4WD road leads an additional 0.3 mile to a chain-link fence that surrounds the summit towers. The highest ground lies along the near side of the fence.
