Ascent Trip Report

Parked at Big Hollow Road and followed red-blazed Black Dome Range Trail, then left onto yellow-blazed Batavia Kill Trail, then right onto blue-blazed Escarpment Trail to the summit. The Blackhead Mountain Trail is short (.7 mi) across the top of the mountain, then intersecting again with the red-blazed Black Dome Range Trail.

There were patches of ice everywhere and some snow on the ground starting at around 2500 feet. As we climbed, the snow got deeper, but never more than 4 or so inches. The trail was relatively well packed and icy from last weekend's hikers. We put our crampons on for the last few hundred feet up Blackhead and left them on for most of the way down. Made a big difference in the footing.

Beautiful day; cold, but not too bad. Very clear, the views were excellent. Blackhead definitely has some of the most striking and dramatic views of the Catskills that we've seen yet - and we've seen the views from 24/35.
