Ascent of Dorset Mountain-West Peak on 2008-12-04
|Date:||Thursday, December 4, 2008|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
|Peak:||Dorset Mountain-West Peak|
| Elevation:||3515 ft / 1071 m|
Ascent Trip ReportI left the TH in a light drizzle and bushwacked to the summit in a light falling snow and a complete white-out with 50-100 feet visibility. An easy bushwack, allow 4-5 hours RT from the TH. Not recommended unless of course you are after the list "Vermont 3500 Foot Peaks".Directions to the TH are as noted below.
From the TH in Dorset Hollow, S of Dorset Mountain, follow the Woods Road for 2 miles to the "saddle and trail junction" between Dorset Mountain to the right and Dorset Mountain West Peak to the left, elevation here is about 2970 feet. The left trail drops down to Danby Four Corners and the right trail continues on to Dorset Mountain.
Start the bushwack to Dorset Mountain West peak from this "saddle and trail junction" following a Westerly direction up the ridge. The evergreen forest floor is generally open with only a few short semi-dense sections, little blowdown, most of the elevation gain from the "saddle" is attained in the first third of the climb and is only moderately steep. I followed open pathways that appeared to be "herd paths" but I can't say for sure because of the snow cover.
Once on the top of the ridge continue along the generally flat ridge until you start to climb again, it seemed long to me. The heavily wooded summit is not evident. I had to walk past the summit and scramble around to ensure I had the actual summit.
DIRECTIONS TO THE TH from the Village of Dorset.
From rte 30 in Dorset find Dorset Hollow Road just West of the Barrows House and drive the paved Road N, staying right at the first junction and passing a number of side Roads. The pavement ends at 1.62 miles, continue straight ahead on the good gravel Road to a fork junction at 3.48 miles, stay right (the road name here changes to Tower Road) and drive to the end of the good gravel Road at 4.23 miles. Park here, this is the TH at elevation 1480', straight ahead is your trail, a rough 4WD Woods Road. In the woods to the left are 2 residential homes and to the right is a driveway.
