Ascent Trip Report

What a great way to end the 'official' winter season for Catskill 3500 winter hikes! Gorgeous, really gorgeous winter day. Sunny, bright, comparatively warm, with slight dusting of snow on the ground. There were plenty of layers of ice beneath the snow dusting, but with the proper snowshoes, we were all fine!
Took a trip out with HOAGIES - Steve & Nanette, Alicia (also from HVH), and Prissy (also from HVH) and headed out to bag the Blackhead Range - the elusive Thomas Cole Mountain one last time! The peak has eluded me the entire winter season, having been at the range 3X now this season!
This time, tried a new route - starting at Barnum Road, and ending at Big Hollow Road. Steve and Nanette were bagging Thomas Cole and Black Dome starting from Barnun Road. Alicia needed Blackhead winter for her 3500, Prissy needed Blackhead for her 3500, and I needed Thomas Cole winter for my W3500. What to do? Nanette, Steve, Prissy and I started at Barnum Road - it was gorgeous! We got through Camel Back Hump, I climbed a tree in snowshoes to get up a ledge - those rock climbing skills really came in handy! We summited another peak that was also >3500' in elevation, but not on the 3500 list yet - gorgeous 360 degree view of mountain ranges!
We followed the red trailmarkers all the way - bagged Thomas Cole after climbing a moderately steep section, continued down to the col between Cole and Black Dome which required minimal butt sliding, then back up Black Dome, took some photos at the gorgeous viewpoint, then continued on to the junction, where everyone met up (perfect timing) and we took a group shot (thanks for the selfie Alicia)! Steve, Nanette, and Alicia headed for the truck while Prissy and I continued on with our quest to Blackhead.
I figured we were there anyway, and Prissy wanted the company, so I might as well go for the entire Blackhead range while I was in the area - we went up yellowtrail (supposedly the steeper side), but caught the 3500' sign - you can tell how deep the snow was from the height difference from the sign! And as a reward, we saw a beautiful view as we were backtracking for our descent - just gorgeous day!
Our times were pretty good as well, given I was still a little tuckered out from the Wednesday bushwhack:
Start 10:30a (from Barnum Road)
Thomas Cole summit 12:20pm
Black Dome summit 1:20pm
Black Head summit 2:20pm
Finish 3:45pm (Big Hollow Road)
Great way to finish the winter season off, I say! And I was really, really, really happy to have hit Thomas Cole - peak #28 - my elusive peak for the season
Now, only 7 peaks to go, and all trailed peaks! Yes!
