Ascent Trip Report

Since I read last month's trip report saying the gate was locked five miles lower down I stopped in Santa Maria to rent a bike. I got a $2500 mountain bike for $65 which proved to be a godsend. Normally I go where you can't take a bike so I don't have one and haven't ridden one in years. Even though my butt got too sore to ride sitting down it saved tons of time. Lots of the road low down isn't steep and there are ups and downs all the way. The road is really smooth and perfect for a rusty rider like myself. That's not to say it wasn't lots of work because it is about 40 miles round trip if you can't get to the gate that I assume is the normal closure. Some of the reports made it sound like it was complicated and hard to find the right roads but I thought it was easy. The first day I rode/hiked to the Alomar guard station which is just a camp area with a picnic table just before you go up onto Big Pine. I got up in the morning and rode up the road to where my gps said there may have been a trail but I think it is gone since the fire. No big deal, it is an easy shot straight up the hill from the road and any bushwhacking is benign.
