Ascent Trip Report

I followed Hans Haustein's footsteps in his excellent TR of 2001, after 14 years everything still applies ... as if time stood still. My TR only attempts to add some information .... one has to read Hans, this is not a stand alone TR.
There are 5 candidate high point areas, I have numbered the areas a la PB and Hans' TR.

AREA 1 & 2 .... .5 miles, 20 minutes RT.
A bit of a typo in Hans' writing, Newcastle is reached by driving north on Hwy #AR284 to a right turn (east) on SFC442 ... and not Hans' SFC284.
It was drizzling somewhat as Mrs Horton was coming out of the chicken coup as I drove up to the rear of their house. I could see from her smile that she knew exactly why I was there, "Yes we are on the County High Point." was her response to my question. "You are welcome to walk out there, the gate is open (pointing to the gate)."
We found cover under her car port as we chatted some. "This black eye in not from my husband, its the result of a bad fall of few days ago."
I found the HP for Area 1 to be near the smaller oak tree. Using my eye-level I sighted from a number of different spots and I found Area 2 to be definitely lower than Area 1, and in my opinion, it need not be visited.

AREA 3 & 4 ..... .75 miles, 25 minutes RT.
We went to both houses and found no one home, perhaps cause its Sunday. We parked at the upper brick house (there is now a small white house right behind it). Rose would stay in the van and deal with the consequences.
I walked north 300 yards to the high ground for Area 3 and found 2 BMs on the north side of the old fence line (Village Creek State Park Boundary).
"USC&G Survey DILLON 1954" at 35.12459,-90.70135, the second BM "DILLON No2" 1954" is to the west.
It's a short track walk 0f 300 yards to check out Area 4.

AREA 5 .... 1 mile, 30 minutes RT.
The only area requiring a real hike.
We parked on SFC442 at exactly .86 miles north of the SFC442/443 junction. On the left is an opening in the woods created by animals and by chance the drainage from a stream (per Hans) and 200 yards further north is a dirt road with corral of sorts on the right.
I entered the woods at the opening and immediately found the drainage stream. At 15 yards I moved off-of the stream to the left and picked up an animal path that climbs westerly on a ridge all the way to the top (.3 miles), arriving a N-S ridge with a white-blazed/well-maintained trail. I turned left (south) on the trail and in 250 yards arrived at the HP.
This white blazed trail tells me that its a part of the Village Creek State Park Trail System. A visit to the main reception center would surely produce a map.
I added orange tape to my hiking route. This is not a difficult route just a few short steep sections, however on this day it was wet, so the steep sections were very slippery, fell/got-muddied-up a few times.

"SAINT FRANCIS COUNTY WAS ESTABLISHED ON OCTOBER 13, 1827, ITS COUNTY SEAT IS FORREST CITY. AS OF THE 2010 CENSUS ITS POPULATION WAS 28,258.
SONNY LISTON, WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION, WAS BORN IN THIS COUNTY."
