Ascent Trip Report

***Private Outing***

Followed the LPC Peak Guide for the trip up, but found the recommended route up the NE ridge to point 3867 to be really overgrown with lots of bushwacking up steep and loose terrain. Coming down we instead took the ridge extending east from 3867; although quite steep and loose for a bit right after coming off 3867, this route is actually a reasonably well maintained trail without any bushwack, and would be a much easier route up than that described in the peak guide. Get there from the parking area by passing through the open gate and walking SE down 1N09 for 0.12 mile. Look for a vague use trail heading off to the south; follow the use trail for a couple hundred feet and it becomes the well defined, reasonably well maintained use trail. Follow the trail up the east ridge to 3867 and then continue on this trail to the summit.

Someone has recently put in a lot of hard work clearing buckthorn and other brush from the trail along the section extending from point 3867 to a bit above the saddle below the ridge coming off point 4043, making for a much easier hike along here. The trail above this recent work is in pretty good shape with only minor intrusion of brush.

We had a reasonably early start for this one, so it was nice and cool for the ascent and was actually a pretty pleasant hike. It heated up enough by time we got back to the car though that we aborted our mission to go get McKinley next and instead went over to get a few little "drive up" bumps up Hwy 18.
