Ascent Trip ReportTook Devil's Path from Spruceton Road, turning West at the swamp (about 1.4 mi in). It's possible that there's a herd path starting from there, but we really couldn't tell becuase of the rain and thick fall of wet leaves.
Some pretty steep sections on the way to the summit of North Dome; becuase of the rain, we couldn't really see the summit until we were almost on top of it, so we just followed our compass straight up and didn't look for easier ways.
The trip over to Sherrill wasn't too hard, but again, visibility was a problem. We got pushed a bit farther south than what would have been ideal, but the dropoff was so steep at points that it was obvious we were a bit off our line. Sherrill has a herd path to the summit from the col, but it breaks into many different ones on the way up. I'd like to say that there were a couple of false summits, but we just couldn't see farther than 20 or 30 yards. We followed "the rule of up".
We followed the rule of "get the hell out of the woods" on the way back down - our bearing was around 60 degrees to put us back on Spruceton road a mile or two from the car. We didn't stay to it, but rather followed Bennett Brook for a while. When things flattened out a bit, we headed north as hard as we could. We followed some logging/bridle paths for a bit as well. I'd say we came out on to Spruceton about 1.5 miles from the car (at Mink Hollow).
