Ascent of Little Bald on 2008-11-01
|Date:||Saturday, November 1, 2008|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
| Location:||USA-North Carolina/Tennessee|
| Elevation:||5200 ft / 1584 m|
Ascent Trip ReportI crossed this summit en route to Big Bald. The A.T. crosses Little Bald 4.5 miles from the parking lot at Spivey Gap. The ascent from Whistling Gap is long and switchback-laden, and seems to take forever. Parts of the north slope of Little Bald had dustings of snow and some of the rocks were slippery. On the south slope, the A.T. is more steep and direct.
The summit of Little Bald is no longer a bald, and is now covered by a young forest. Other than the relatively young age of the trees, I saw very few signs that a bald ever existed here (typically, on ex-balds, you see a tell-tale understory of thick green grass with a canopy of young trees).
