Ascent Trip Report

During visit to Barcelona, my girlfriend, Lena, and our friend, Jane, and I decided to take a hike while some of the others in our party ventured around the town more. We took the train to Aeri de Montserrat and took the aeri (gondola) up from the train station to the monastery.

After picking up a map shortly beyond the monastery, we trudged off, up Route 3 (at least that's what it was referred to on the map) towards Pla dels Ocells. Reaching Pla dels Ocells we continued on in the direction of Sant Jeroni, which was a bit hard to find. We were first drawn astray by the hermitage (also named Sant Jeroni) which led us out onto a bluff overlooking Llobregat River valley to the northeast. As the ribs of rock to the right and left of our position were clearly higher we turned back and finally found the trail to Sant Jeroni.

Once assured we were on the right track, I arranged with Jane to make everything ready for the real reason we were hiking Sant Jeroni. As Lena crested the peak and stepped on to the concrete platform, Jane and I were prepared, Jane with her video camera and me with my engagement ring. Lena was shocked and with a word we were engaged.

After some crying, some hugging, some resting and trying to get cell reception and making a few calls, we headed back down the peak towards the upper station of Sant Joan funicular. We took the funicular back to the monastery, picked up a few gifts for friends and family, took the aeri back to the train and the train back to Barcelona to celebrate with the rest of our travel companions.
