Ascent Trip Report

See my reports on Cougar Peak and the Matterhorn. The hike from the Matterhorn down to the saddle and back up to Square Top is barren, and after the steep rocky descent from the Matterhorn summit the terrain is just like the rest of the Jarbidge Ridge--all boot-shredding small rocks. The log on Square Top is another nice mailbox.
I didn't have enough time or water to continue on to Jumbo and Jarbidge peaks; so at the saddle below Square Top, I took the lower of two good trails angling down across the long scree slope below the saddle, leading to the ridge between Gorge and Snowslide creeks. After the scree slope, the trail stayed on the steep slope on the south side of the ridge, but soon vanished. So I climbed up to the top of the ridge and followed elk tracks down the very steep slope. From the wide meadow at about 8,000 feet, you work your way down into the canyon close to the camp ground. A heckuva workout for a 70-year-old; 16 hours to cover 14.7 miles and three peaks.
