Ascent Trip Report

Others have described the ascent from the east, but I approached via the Bull of the Woods trail and crossed from Bull of the Woods lookout down 800' on the Big Slide Lake Trail, then up about 700' on the trail to the saddle just east of Big Slide Mountain's summit. An unmarked trail continues for a few yards due east to a helicopter drop point, presumably from the fire that swept over the area to the north and east. Shortly beyond that it was off trail along the ridge with only a couple of very short stretches with useful game trails. I chose the S side of the unnamed 5440+ peak between Big Slide and Knob and made my way - eventually - to Schreiner. I went over Knob in both directions since it was far easier than to sidehill around it through the old burn over logs and limbs. There is enough of that on this route in any case. All told, around a 12 mile day, give or take.

(Someone had pitched the sign for the Lake Lenore Trail into the brush and I just happened to see it as I was double-checking my map. Retrieved it and placed it back near the trail junction - no telling how long it will stay there.)
