Ascent Trip Report

This report is for hikers that don't have the directions to the TH. An old guide book told me that the jeep road to the summit, from the south side of the mountain, is on private land and no longer accessible to the hiker. It says to bushwack from the north side on a State owned tract of land.

I set out to do a bushwack. Once in Claryville I asked a few locals and they told me that a maintained trail existed on the north side of the mountain. I took their information, found the TH and climbed the mountain. It is a short and easy 35 minute climb to the wooded summit, a climb to the restored Fire Tower rewards you with a 360 degree panorama. The small Fire Warden's cabin is manned on weekends from mid-April to October.

Drive rte 28 North to Indian Head where you pick up rte 47 South to Claryville. At the T junction in Claryville make a left on the paved "Denning road" (rte 19) and drive about 2 miles, going over 2 bridges. After the second bridge make an right on the paved "Red Hill road". This road rises up the side of the mountain then descends down the other side, towards the bottom you'll take a left on the first wide gravel road, clearly signed "Coons road". Coons road rises steeply and in a short distance ends at a height of land, where Randolph road goes to the right and Dinch road continues straight ahead.
Dinch road is a rough and narrow gravel road which descends steeply, it is signed "dead-end" and "seasonal use-only". Follow Dinch road about half a mile down to the TH on State land on the left side of the road. It has a parking area, you can't miss it.
