Ascent Trip ReportHow did I fail to reach the summit of a drive-up? Well -- this isn't really a drive-up. First you drive up about 7 miles of road. Then, to reach the highest legal point on this mountain, you need to hike up a fairly steep couple of hundred yards of desert to the highest part of a fence around the TV towers on top of the mountain. I know others have done it -- I just felt it would be best to do it at a time when fewer people might be around. I didn't know what the rules were about off-trail travel here, and the ranger at the gate had mentioned a couple of times not to go too far from my car without water. I wasn't prepared for a real hike. It was a clear Sunday morning around 7:30 and already starting to get hot. The road was positively swarming with runners and bike riders. You really have to be careful driving up this road.
