Ascent Trip Report

Kramer Spitze: 1985m, P776m

Map: Freytag & Berndt 1:50k map WK322 (100m contours).

Stats: 10km, 1285mH

Time: Thur 4 Sept 2008.

Start: Garmisch, residential road. We parked at approx 700m elevation, SE of St Martins Hutte, c.300m E of where Trail 225 crosses the road.

Route: Having parked E of the mapped stream, before the road narrows and steepens, hike W for a few hundred metres then turn R (N) onto Trail 225, which is wide and winds its way uphill through nice woodland, a mix of conifers and deciduous. Passing (or calling at) St Martins Hutte (food) the trail zigzags steeply uphill, sharing the designation with KR5 before forking L (W) off the latter just before the upper limit of the woodland. Beyond the trees the trail becomes more rocky for a while then emerges onto a ridge. There are several ups and downs, one fairly significant and involving easy scrambling (YDS 2+). The trail then bends round to the R, crossing a steep flank with a big drop to the R, and a gritty surface where great care is required in descent - one slip here and you would go a long way. On regaining the crest having outflanked the N top on its N side, the trail turns sharp L to pass the same top on its W flank, this time on an easy path which descends to a saddle then climbs up to the summit, either directly via its nice scrambly N ridge, or via the path just L (E) of the ridgeline.

Difficulties: Mostly an easy trail, calling for occasional use of the hands, hence YDS2+. However there is one passage shortly before the summit, where the steep gritty path above a big drop, requires considerable care.

Summit: Compact and rocky, with a large cross, a bench at its base, and a rather bent survey nail which is presumably a trig point of some kind.

Triangulation point: Bent survey nail within metres of the highest point, bearing the inscription Vermessungs Punkt.

Notes: Following this morning's Zugspitze ascent, which we did in poor weather by cable car, we were in need of some exercise, and this hill a few miles N of the Germany highpoint was an ideal way to spend the afternoon. Hiking by 12:35, we were at St Martins Hutte in an hour and ready for lunch. The meal was large, tasty and very German. Sitting on the terrace with our beers we looked across to this morning's peak, still cloud-decked, and SE to yesterday's Karwendelgebirge.

After a filling lunch, we made our way steadily uphill, passing fewer folk above the Hut that we had below. It's quite a rocky peak, not really expected from the map, but the route is straightforward and easy to follow, and views are good throughout, even though the big peaks are in cloud. We are at the summit by 16:30. There are a couple of rather tame Choughs, which I spend a while photographing and videoing before heading down after Andrew. Apart from one steep loose section it's all straightforward: we're down just before 18:00. The ascent has taken just under 5 hours, plus 30 mins for lunch.

Tomorrow is the last day of our trip and we now have a longish drive, through Lichtenstein (briefly) and into Switzerland. Having eaten well at lunchtime, we make do with a quick meal at a service area, before navigating our way to a big layby near Schwagalp, ready for our final Ultra of the trip: Säntis
