Ascent Trip Report

Monte Barro, 922m, P657m

Map: IGC sheet 22, 1:50k, 50m contours

Stats: 322mH, c.2km

Time: 23 Aug 2008, c. 1h in total.

Start: From the village of Galbiate, a narrow winding road leads up to the ?monastery complex of S. Francesco. There is parking at the top: we parked at one of several places a little lower down.

Route: From the roadhead, a good trail leads up to the east ridge, bypassing a minor top on its N side and continuing, steep with very minor scrambling, to the summit.

Difficulties: path is a little scrambly; limestone rock can be slippery, probably more so after rain.

Triangulation point: None mapped nor found.

Summit: rocky limestone summit with cross, a birds-eye view of Lecco and extensive views although blocked by higher ground to E.

Notes: We arrived about 3pm, having flown from UK to Geneva then driven across via Turino. Andrew found a "false trail" with railings which leads to a telecoms mast partway up. Just afterwards we crosses a minor rocky top with a little scrambling. This was easily bypassed on the way down via the main path. the view from the top included Corno di Canzo, to the NW, which we climbed next, although at this point we realised it might be less easy than we expected from the map!
