Ascent Trip Report

As this trip took in four summits and one possible additional summit (there are two summits on the East Summit), all the trip data represent the entire 22.2 mile hike. I started at the Jefferson Summit, which is really a pass and the high point of the road in. The last mile or so of this road is in poor shape and I used 4WD to climb up to the pass. For a good description of the route in, see Dennis Poulin's trip report on peakbagger. I started a little after six a.m. and at around the 11,700' mark made my way down to the saddle below the East Summit, losing over 700' of elevation. There are two summits that share the same contour line. The one furthest away has a register placed by Bob Sumner. His was the only other signature, mine being the second. I then returned along the saddle and dropped into a meadow and climbed up the other side to the long, open summit plateau and headed for the Middle Summit, which appears to be a non-descript rock pile, but it too had a register placed by Bob Sumner, with many more entries. From here I continued on north to the North Summit. The mark on the garmin gps map is not the high point, however, it was easily the most scenic spot on the summit. The high point is marked by a huge rock cairn in the middle of the large, open summit, and has no register, or any views to speak of. I returned mostly the way I came, bypassing the Middle Summit and made my way to the back end of the South Summit, gaining the ridge and followed it to the collection of communication crap on the summit where the bench mark is. Again the register was missing. There was one last year, as I climbed the South Summit a year ago this weekend. I don't know who is stealing the registers, but this is becoming increasingly common.
