Ascent Trip Report

This is really an incredible area, and quite sad that we were the only party in the vicinity on Memorial Day weekend.

The road in is the first decision. The direct route from Winnemucca to the Onion Valley reservoir is about 100 miles, with about 20 miles of dirt. The first about 17 of which are fairly nice with incredible views. But the last few miles get very tough (good 4x4s with good drivers can make it without getting out of their vehicle to inspect the road). It took us about an hour to do those 20 miles.
The more common way is rather circuitous being 40 miles from our original turn off of 140, but much easier to drive so it took us only 1:15 to reach our original turn off over those 40 miles versus 1 hour to do the 20 miles.

From the Onion Valley reservoir, the road to Blue Lake is not pretty, but easier than the bad section of the direct route to Winnemucca.

From the parking area (which is still a short hike from Blue Lake), we walked to the lake. From there, the route we took back (crossing the lake at a rock barrier) has a bit more elevation loss (and regain), but less bushwhacking and less mileage. Once over the initial pass, the route becomes clear with North Duffer in clear view and a decent use trail leading towards Bare Pass (though the trail mostly disappears after the hidden meadow).

When we started heading up towards Bare Pass, we decided to aim right for the north summit. The going was mostly class 2 with maybe a few class 3 challenges thrown in (possibly avoidable). The ridge from the north summit to the main summit was technically easy (mostly class 2), but time consuming. The final rocks on the main summit required solid class 3 scrambling.
