Ascent Trip Report

Camped at the White Birches Campground in Shelburne, east of Gorham. Left at 6:15am with light drizzle and got to the Berlin Fish Hatchery at 7am, just as the sun was coming out. Luckily the gate was open. Weather turned beautiful, sunny, warm. Left trail head at 7:10. First mile of Bunnell Notch was very flat and we made good time. Made it to Kilkenny Ridge trail at 8:30am and stopped at the Old Cabot Trail junction for a break and snack. Hit the viewpoint at 9:15am. Monorail made last mile difficult, made it to cabin at 9:50am and signed the cabin log. Deeper snow made the trail a little easier to manage, saw a few moose prints and made the summit at 10:10. Coming back toward the cabin we saw a Spruce Grouse in a tree right on the trail, was within a few feet and just missed a very good picture when it flew away to another branch. Headed back the way we came, saw three people on the way down. Made it to the trailhead at 12:30pm
