Ascent Trip Report

We tried a new route which, as they sometimes do, ended up proving the wisdom of the traditional route.

The road to this trailhead was pretty good- one of our party took a Subaru Outback up there with no real issues.

We originally planned on taking Sheep Creek all the way to the ridge southwest of the summit, but upon continued brush, we decided to break for the southeast ridge. I'm not certain if staying in the drainage would have been better or worse, but the ridge was no picnic. It was steep and loose terrain getting to the ridge, then bushwhacking intermittently (at times quite bad) from there until about 500' below the summit.

On the way down, we stopped by the Lyon County (Nevada) high point, our primary target, which was easy to find.

From there, we attempted to descend the "standard" route, but misjudged the canyon, and had a challenging canyoneering experience with a couple nasty dry falls we had to work around. To add insult after injury, we were snowed upon, somewhat significantly, the last hour or so of the hike with an inch accumulation on the vehicles when we finally got back to them! Fortunately the snow held off until we were out of the challenging canyon or it could have gotten really ugly.
