Ascent Trip Report

The Mabel hiking group explored some obscure trails down the Rio Grande Gorge north of the Wild Rivers Recreation area. We took the Sunshine Rd. to near the gorge. A wooden post marks the parking area. The "trail" consists of nothing more than three or four cairns marking a small gap in the cliff face. It's really a rock scramble not a trail. Once we got to the river, part of the group wanted to walk along the river north, looking for the next trail up.The other part wanted to go back up the route we just came down and drive to the next trailhead. I went with the first group about a mile and a quarter up river until we came to an area where further progress was impossible without fording through the very cold water. We turned around. On the way up I grabbed a cactus at a spot where it was necessary to pull myself up from a rock hand hold. I actually had gloves in my pack. Next time I'll wear them
