Ascent Trip ReportA weekend hiking trip to the ADK with Rose and the Grandchildren (6-9 years old), Stephen, Marcus, Patrick and Matthew. We rented a lean-to on Heart Lake.
We set out from the lean-to at 8h30 hours and got to above the main trail junction, within a few hundred feet of the summit, where the decision was made to turn around ..... Marcus had developed stomach cramps and was not feeling well.
Throughout the climb the boys had great time but argued continuously as to who should be the leader, the older ones taking advantage of the younger ones, calling them names "like your too fat and slow".
When the decision was taken to turn around Patrick was really pissed, crying, "I came here to climb this mountain and I want to do it, I don't want to turn around."
The grandchildren were told and learned of two life's lessons on this day..... 1) when in a group we take care of each other, and 2) one doesn't have to like the leader's decision but he has to accept it.
"ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AND END."
