Ascent Trip ReportThe road in (Haws Canyon) is pretty decent for high-clearance, but at about 7140 where the topo shows the road making a right turn, the "road" is virtually invisible, and a road not on the map continues up that other valley. If you follow the topo and drive across the meadow (may have mud requiring 4WD), the road eventually continues and improves to a wilderness boundary (which is marked on the side of the road, not blocking the road) at 7280'. If one does not have 4WD, there is another water crossing a little before the meadow that might make a good starting point.
While the bushwhacking towards the top has been mentioned considerably, one should wear long pants for two other good reasons- fair number of short thorny plants that invade the animal trails, and considerable ticks.
We took Dennis Poulin's route, but made a couple enhancements-
- exited the gully around 8600' to head further left (west) which considerably reduced the "wall of brush" which did not begin until 9200' and ended about 20' below the summit
- brought a machete to better deal with "wall of brush"
- on the return found a nice animal trail leading over the little divide east of the saddle @ 8,000' which was easier going both up and down than going over the saddle directly
Exiting the gully, and a couple places thereafter did involve some scrambling, but it was easy class 3.
Still, it wasn't easy, but I think we had a better time than earlier parties. This peak was well worth the effort!
