Ascent Trip Report

Josh and I made the 2.5 hour trip to the parking area on Moonhaw rd, and started hiking at 9:30am. We pretty much hiked up to the Friday mtn. ridgeline and followed the ridge to the base of the cliffs on Friday. We then found and followed the rim trail over to Balsam Cap. The trail was easy to follow at times and unrecognizable at other times. The ground was mostly snow covered at the top which make hiking a bit slippery at times. By staying to the left side of the mountain we found the canister without problem. We then dropped into the col and headed straight for Friday. Very dense evergreens here and knee high snow made hiking difficult, so we cut back to the edge of the cliffs which had less snow and was less dense. It took some scrambling to get to the top and we were fortunate to find the canister in the dense pines. If you stay close to the cliffs you may find a herd trail that leads to it, but it is at the edge of the cliffs. We took a short break and headed down thru the cliffs. No tips here, you just have to find a way down thru the best you can. We actually shimmied down a tree at one point, but it wasn't too bad...just added to the excitement. We saw a big raccoon at one point. I think we woke him up, and he wandered out right below us. We got a good look and some pictures. We eventually found the rim trail and headed back down. About 5 minutes from the car we had to cross a decent size stream which wouldn't have been at problem except that my hiking pole got stuck in the rocks as I made my last jump causing me to lose my balance and hop into the water. Felt good actually, but I was wet to my knees. Fortunately I had spare socks and shoes in the car. Then we headed home. Hike took about 7hrs. round trip. This was our first bushwack hike, and everything went pretty much as planned. Good day hiking with Josh!
