Ascent Trip ReportBeautiful early spring outing for this triple header.
Started early from the Big Hollow TH and hiked on through past the Batavia Kill Lean-To. Chilly start, layered to begin with until the sun got down into the valley; once the sun popped out gloves and hat were discarded. Trail conditions were free of snow but occasional ice patches that are now quite slick due to melt/refreeze. Made quick work of the valley trail towards the northern approach to Blackhead. Views wide to the north (towards Windham High Peak). Trail conditions really iced up toward the summit, a few precarious steps but nothing too unwieldy. Trail from the summit to the south was deep snow and not packed, so I'll have to visit those views another time.
2. Black Dome:
Trail down Blackhead and over to Black Dome was pretty clear of ice and snow. Beautiful views with the bare trees. Quick enjoyable hike to the summit; sun really warmed up the place.
3. Thomas Cole:
Trail from Black Dome over to Thomas Cole was deep snow and only mildly packed, so postholing was a minor issue. Fairly flat and uneventful approach to the treed and viewless summit, but otherwise a nice hike. The sun really warmed the snow and made postholing even more tedious on the return hike. Happy to get back up Black Dome before the afternoon made the deep snow really tough to traverse. Took the Big Hollow trail from Black Dome back to the TH in what turned out to be a high 50s afternoon.
