Ascent Trip Report

Tripyramids, Whiteface, Passaconaway
We have to get started early today, Dad and I are going to hike over the Tripyramids, Whiteface and finally over Passaconaway. Mom will hike with us for awhile this morning and then drive to the other end and we will meet somewhere on the other side of Whiteface.
With the moon providing a little morning light, we start our hike at 6:40am. Got to the Tripoli-loop at 7:30am a pretty good pace for us. We got to the summit of N. Tripyramid at 9:20am, going up the slide was quite a challenge! It was fun, but you had to keep re-evaluating your path. Ran into some rather slippery sections, which made us have to change our path a couple of times. Now that we are on the ridge, getting to the middle peak didn’t take us very long and we took a break at the peak at 9:55am.
We started on the Kate Sleeper trail at 10:35am. I am sure glad we didn’t have to go down the slide any further, that is very steep and loose, which makes it pretty slippery going down.
Once we got down the bit of the slide, the Kate Sleeper trail is a nice hike. Since we were so close to a hundred highest, Dad made me go over to the East Sleeper. This was actually a good time to take a break and have some lunch.
Irene did quite a bit of damage along this area. The trail has been cleared very well, but you can still see all the damage that was done when the storm came through.
We went over Whiteface around 12:30pm, actually we missed the summit and went right by it. We had to return to get a summit picture! We started up the Passaconaway spur at 1:40pm. The spur trail is pretty steep compared to what we had to hike for the past couple of hours. Dad and I got to the summit at 2:10pm. We took a break at one of the openings that we could see where we came from this morning. We headed off the summit at 2:25pm. We still weren’t close enough to Mom to reach her on the walkie-talkies, but I hope we will run into her soon!
We hit the Dicey trail at 2:55pm and ran into Mom a little while later. This is a LONG walk down after a long day of hiking over four peaks. Dad said he had trouble keeping up with me toward the end. We reached the car at 4:30pm – that sure is a long day, just under 10 hours and over 5,000’ elevation gain over the day!
