Ascent Trip Report

I followed the directions of the guide book "The Other 54", it says that the herd path starts about 1/2 mile past phelps brook bridge on the Van Hoevenberg trail after "the top of a steep section, along a flatter area". I went all the way to Tabletop's TH (cairn) and back, spending 45 minutes with no luck. I couldn't find it so I decided to bushwack from the general vicinity, following a 300 degree compass reading. After 4-5 minutes I ran into the "herd path", well defined, easy to follow, a 20 minute climb. Small opening thru the trees towards Tabletop.I followed the path back down.

Here is my description of the "HERD PATH'S START LOCATION". As you get to "the top of a steep section, along a flatter area" you come to a spot where you climb about 15 rock steps, followed by 1 rock and 2 log steps. The herd path starts here on your right at about 3460' elev (guess), it follows a one oclock direction for a very short distance then veers right at the 300 degrees. From here to Tabletop's cairn, on the Van Hoevengerg trail, it is a 5-6 minute walk up.
