Ascent Trip Report

My father and I parked at the end of Tarlton Rd. and hiked down the old 4x4 road that now appears to be used for snowmobiling. The road was mostly packed ice by this time and was rather slippery. Other sections were very muddy and both my dad and I broke through the ice a few times and got out boots in the water/mud. There was a lot of up and down until you finally ascend towards the Col between Neville and Nottingham. We followed the road to Neville peak first and had some great views north to Mooselauke and the Belknaps.

From Neville we headed back to elbow in the road where it turns towards Neville and started the bushwhack to Nottingham peak. There was a lot more snow than we expected and much of the whack was slogging through knee deep snow. The warm weather had softened the snow just enough that we sunk in almost every step. Following the topo map we went over the first two false peaks and finally made it to the third, and true, peak of Nottingham Mtn. The summit appears to be marked by a cairn but just over from that is little outlook with a large chimney on it that we both climbed for a picture opportunity.

Near the Nottingham summit we came across a snowmobile trail and decided to follow that. It led just behind the two false peaks before ending. From here we attempted a more diagonal route down back to the old road through some dense pines to avoid the deeper snow. This was good for the less snow but worse for pine branches and some steep and slick parts. Nothing too bad and we were back at the old 4x4 road. Then it was a straight shot down to the car from here. Didn’t see anyone on the trail, it was a nice quite hike (well except for us talking).
