Ascent Trip Report

DAY #10 (SEPT 22) .... YAK KHARKA(4018M) TO THORUNG PHEDI(4450M) .... 4(48) hours, 8(79)km.

"bhiralo matti/talla .... steep uphill/downhill."

The temperature dropped to well below 50F last evening, probably had snow up at the pass. Well before leaving this morning the Swedish couple walked in, on the way down from Ledar (the next up-trail village). They arrived there yesterday and the young man was feeling sick from altitude during the evening, so they left early and are on their way to Manang. They left without paying the Churi Lattar Lodge, so she gave me 100R for the Lodge.

About half an hour past Ledar (I gave the rupees to the Lodge) the trail crosses the Jhargeng Khola from the east to the westside on a very dangerous rickety bridge with slides on each side, a dangerous area. We took a long stop once safe across.
Another short day on the trail, arriving at the bottom of the pass Thorung Phedi (4450m) at noon hour and the Thorung Base Camp Lodge, a basic/humid place with stinky outside toilets. Everyone on the trail goes thru this place, the last 2 evening's the Hotels have been the worst to date (normal since they are the most remote)

After lunch Raj got a note from Subba delivered by a down-trail bound porter. Subba was at the Upper Camp with some issues (I don't know what they were), Raj wanted me to go up and overnight with them, saying that it was another 400m of altitude .... who was I to believe Raj's bs or my guide book which said that it was 600-700m to the Upper Camp, meaning I'd gain +1100m in one day ..... I opted for safety, I refused, "Why don't you go up and see what you can do for them, I'll go part way with you for acclimatization and come back here for the night". He chose not to go ?????
I went up by myself anyway to about 200-300m (1 hour) before turning around, I was slow, huffed and puffed, I could feel the altitude but no real symptoms, the old Aussi couple did the same only they went higher.
I tried to rest as much as possible and drink a lot of liquids, even at rest/moving around slowly I had to breath heavily. One needs a lot more days to be properly acclimatized.

I went to bed at 7h00 hours, we will leave for the pass at 4h30 hours.

"THE WAY TO GET TO THE TOP ..... IS BY TAKING ONE SMALL STEP AT A TIME."
