Ascent Trip Report

DAY #9 (SEPT 21) .... MANANG(3540M) TO YAK KHARKA(4018M) .... 4(44) hours, 7(71)km.

"charpi .... latrine/toilet."

I had difficulty sleeping last night, I dreamt that Rose was having an affair with an underworld guy because I wasn't paying her enough attention.

Had a break stop at Gunsang's Marsyandi Hotel, little over an hour after leaving, super location on top of a hill. A popular spot, the Swedish couple from yesterday' visit to the Hermitage was there, plus a British and Israel couples. All drank tea enjoying the scenery.
We crossed on a bridge over the Khone Khola and the confluence with the Jhargeng Khola, the trail now climbs the eastside (right) of the Jhargeng river valley. This is a very remote spectacular valley, ahead is Thorung Peak, Annapurna and Gangapurna Ranges, awesome views in all directions. Little vegetation, just grass.
Not long after we arrive at the small village of Yak Kharka for a very short day (12hoo hours), only 6 buildings, 2 new hotels under constrution. Raj checked us in at the Gangapurna Hotel, poor facilities, humid and stinky. Facilities in this village are the poorest so far, apparently hotel costs up here are a fraction of what they are further down (which I understand were only 2-4$).

Today we met up with a horse/yak caravan carrying apples to the lower villages, it came up from Jomson (in the next valley) over Thorung-La (amazing). This is animal country unlike further down the valley ....here they have horses, yaks, cows, sheep and goat grazing in the mountains.
The Hotel owner's 3 kids (oldest an 8 year old girl) always playing outside unattended, well tanned and weathered from the cold and wind, I gave them one pen (running out) and each a pin and a chocolate bar.

The nights have been getting colder as we got higher and up here the Hotel knows how to cope , the huge long dinner table has a heavy blanket skirt down to the floor all around, and at dinner time they put pans of hot coal underneath to heat up the place, you sit with your feet under the table inside the skirt. Very confortable.
Feeling good, cold is undercontrol and not a problem, no altitude symptoms.
