Ascent Trip ReportWe hiked Gothics as part of a weekend trip to hike the Lower Range -- Gothics, Armstrong, Upper Wolf Jaw and Lower Wolf Jaw. Due to time constraints, not to mention quite a bit of fatigue, we dropper Lower Wolf Jaw from the agenda.
We started the hike on Friday afternoon, hiking from the Garden into the Johns Brook Lodge area and staying overnight at one of the Lodge's lean-tos. On Saturday morning, we set out around 7am and tacked Gothics first. Or, more correctly, Gothics tackled us. This had to be one of the most challenging hikes I have ever done. The trail to the summit was very steep. Although parts had ladders or cords to use as handholds, there was a significant section of open rock face that gave us pause for thought as we tried to figure out the best way to ascend.
The views from on top were worth the effort though. A storm was passing through the area, and we could see rain falling over the nearby mountains as the storm moved through the area. Very cool. Once the lightening started, however, we shuffled off the top and on to Armstrong.
Armstrong and Upper Wolf Jaw were much more reasonable challenges after surmounting Gothics. After topping Upper Wolf Jaw, we decided that Lower Wolf Jaw would have to wait. So, we made our way back to the lean-to and passed out shortly after dinner. We hiked out the next morning (Sunday) and grabbed an excellent breakfast at the Noon Mark Diner.
One suggestion for anyone considering this hike. Although the lean-to is cheaper, I'd suggest spending the extra money to stay at the JBL. We saw hikers on the trail who described their turkey dinner at the JBL the night before. Suffice to say, it sounded a lot better than our dehydrated meal packets.
