Ascent Trip ReportEasy road hike from Stepps gap on way to Mount Mitchell. The summit has 3 towers, not accessible.
From Stepps gap on Mount Mitchell Parkway #128, park at the Park Office, accross the road is a gravel gated service road, sign reads "Mt Mitchell Radio Tower". Hike the road to the south to the summit area ..... the summit is a fenced in Communication tower and not accessible.
On the return trip I visited the Mount Gibbs summit ....... a short trail hike from the service road (at the col between Clingmans Peak and Mount Gibbes by the service buildings) leads to the summit's benchmark.
NB - Alternately to the left of the gated service road is an overgrown herd path (parallel to the road) that climbs to Gibbs.
Also Mount Hallback (immediately north of Stepps gap and a short bushwack) and Potato Knob (semi bushwack) couldn't be added to this trip.
