Ascent Trip ReportRose and I attended our first HP Convention, the 16th Annual High Pointers Convention, Black Mesa, OK, Sept 18-22,2002, held at Camp Billy Joe just outside of Kenton OK, population 50. Over 200 attended the event. This is my second visit to this HP.
We enjoyed the nearby attractions like Autograph Rock, Robbers Roost, Mt Capulin, Santa Fe Trail, etc. however our highlight was the club hike to the summit,with over 100 participants. All were surprised to see a 4 WD truck pull up from the NM side with gurus Jack Longacre and Paul Zumwalt and a huge watermelon. Everyone got to taste Jack's favorite HP treat. It was a party atmosphere, the highpoint is one huge flat mesa with a tall monument.
Park Ranger CD Perkins, the convention's key-note speaker, was there to supervise the party. We made new friends Kevin and Jenny Baker, Skip and Phyllis, Donna and Roger Panizzi.
