Ascent Trip Report3 day trip. In from Upper Kananaskis Lake on Saturday to Aster Lake (12 km). Ran into Ranger who actually checked our permit!!! Said he fined two other groups who didn't have permits $110 each - suckers.
Sunday ascent day. Left camp at 6:30. Summited at 12:30. Returned to camp by 6:00. Would recommend placing running belay ice screw protection through the last 50 m of elevation on the North snowface as the snow is rotten and thin over pretty good ice.
On descent there was one self-arrested slip in group and one person that had a crampon nearly come off. Protection was placed after. Should have been placed before. Actually used a picket as well as around 3350 on some 35+ slopes the snow is rotten and 3+ feet deep. Ascended by North Face Route (Class II, no technical 5th class grade). Hiked out on Monday.
Trip was with the ACC Edmonton Section lead by JP Sha, co-lead by Bewrnie Jess.
