Ascent Trip Report

Out for a day hike with my daughter's children, Stephen and Matthew, this is my 4th visit to this superb summit with its easy access from just S of Smugglers Notch - the wildest/most interesting Notch in all of the USA-NE. I biked this Notch, N to S, and I can tell you that the descent from the top smokes your brakes, as the road finds/winds its way thru the rock fall.

We had a nice climb, Stephen leading. We visited Taft Lodge, Matthew was impressed and he told me that he'll have to come back here with his Dad, had a snack break. The lodge has a full time caretaker, they charge a daily fee of 5$.

We summitted after a 3 hour climb, lots of people, ate our lunch. On the way down we went over to the Adams Apple and once again stopped in at the Lodge.

Overall it was an uneventfull climb except for Matthew's demeanour. He started complaining from very the beginning, saying how difficult it was/wouldn't be able to do it/I need a break every few minutes/etc. We started talking about about his favorite rock group "Kiss" ! ! completely forgetting about the climb ! ! he knew all of the characters and wouldn't stop talking about them, especially the drummer ! ! he breezed to the top and I had hard time keeping up, of course Stephen made sure that he did the leading. At the end of the hike Matthew was a happy camper.

We stopped in at McDonalds in Swatton on our return trip home.
