Ascent Trip Report

I was faced with the interesting scenario of needing to drive from Troy, NY to Burlington, VT for a quick visit whilst trying to avoid an incoming snowstorm on the way. Since I live in Atlanta these days, I don't get a lot of opportunities to work on my 46er list, so I decided to check off a couple of the most accessible peaks while I had the chance.

After an early breakfast at Manory's in Troy (where they still know my name and order despite living in the south), I drove my subcompact rental up 87 and the parking just south of Giant. The weather was perfect, even if it was a completely cloudy, the snow was crunchy and the trail was well tramped down. Since my snowshoes were awaiting my arrival in Vermont, I only had microspikes for traction, but was fortunate to have a clear path to tromp around on. While I didn't get any views, I made it to the Giant summit and then to the the Rocky summit successfully. I was pretty slow on this hike, but I blame that on a couple of nights staying up late with college buddies! At least I moved fast enough to make it over the bridge into VT before the snowstorm hit.

It felt good to get back to work on the 46er list, since my last hike was almost a year ago! Fortunately, this time I didn't have to carry a wounded hiker down the mountain!
