Ascent Trip ReportWhat a snowy day for a hike, Winter Storm Pax hit NY hard!
Roads in this area were slow but passible and the Devil's Tombstone parking area has been kept pretty well cleared out throughout this winter. (I parked in the town of Hunter to be safe not knowing how the storm would progress throughout the day, and to add some easy miles. I hiked the road in, adding ~8-9mi round trip. It would've been fine to park at the trailhead.) The hike up from Devil's Tombstone was snowy, breaking trail all day, and snow drifts knee deep up near the summit, at least a foot deep at the base. From the trailhead it took 2hrs to summit, only 45 mins down. My tracks near the bottom were already filled in by the time I made it back down! Some views were visible off the side of Plateau, but it mostly made for a low visibility day. This was a lovely, mostly tree covered hike, offering some protection from the snow and wind, moderate temps in the upper 20's degF.
