Ascent Trip ReportOn Monday we decided to meet up with some friends from Tupper and take the kids to Cascade & Porter. The most my kids had ever hiked before was Mt Jo, and Mendon Ponds. As we started out from Rt 73, my daughter quickly lagged behind, and announced she wasn't going any further...after convincing her to get moving and join the group, she relented, and then became quite a rock-hopper. My son, who is 10, loved every minute of it, even (especially??) the muddy trails and occasional rain. We reached the top of Cascade in about 2 1/2 hours, and it was completely socked in - no views. As we sat down to have a snack, the clouds parted and we had fabulous views - for about five minutes - and then it closed in again. Fortunately it was enough, and we headed down for the junction to head over to Porter. I knew my son would go, but was shocked and surprised when my daughter also wanted to go...we made quick, but wet, time to Porter, and with no views there either, turned around and headed back quickly also. The trails were not only muddy, but there was a lot of standing water in this stretch. But, the wet trails allowed my son to find a red eft along the way, adding to his joy for the day.
When we returned to the junction, those who waited had already started down, so we moved on down and met them at the large slab on the Cascade Trail...finally - the skies had opened and there were some beautiful views. (As we waited a little girl came scrambling up - maybe four or five - and turned around and told her mother "Mommy, you get up here fast - it is sooo beautiful you can't believe it). It was indeed, with the clouds and mist moving in and out, my kids finally got a taste of why we do this.
I can't say for sure, but after their first two, I believe they will both do more towards their 46...my son for sure, my daughter, we'll see.
Two more for me, but mostly I enjoyed being there with the whole family this time...it made it very special.
