Ascent Trip Report

Sierra Club Backpack Trip from Horseshoe Meadows up Cottonwood Pass Trail to a base camp at small lake west of Cirque Peak (7 Miles from trailhead). Scrambled up mountain south of Cirque Peak made it to base of Cirque Peak by 10:30 AM (gain 400'). Leader decided to bag Langley then return to bag Cirque Peak if we had time. We travelled north toward Mount Langley then dropped 500' to the top of Old Army Pass. At Noon, we started up the Langley main trail. After 2.5 Hours we reached 2/3 of the ascent to 13,100 (1,000 feet below peak). The 2 Sierra Club leaders were too exhausted to lead the other 6 participants to the summit, so we had to abort the remainder of the trip at 2:30 PM. They figured it would be another 2 hours to the summit, which means by the time we descended and returned to camp it would be in the dark. The six participants were very disappointed to not have bagged either Langley nor Cirque Peak - the objective described in the Sierra Club WTC, Sierra Peaks activity schedule.
