Ascent Trip Report

We had planned to hike Crestone Needles until about a week before we left. This was the first official Class III summit for both of us and we decided to try the lesser of two evils. The Red Gully was not extremely tough but we did take our time going up and coming down and we did find ourselve in a few spots that required a little more than Class III climbing skills. The final climb back over Broken Hand Saddle left me drained and we walked the last 1.5 miles in the hail/rain so I was fairly tired by the end. The road to the summit was rough (although we did make it in a all-wheel drive rental vehicle with minimal clearance) and I would only recommend it if you have a four wheel drive vehicle with good ground clearance.
